Mosquito Control Programs

"Local governments and mosquito control programs often use an integrated mosquito management (IMM) approach to control mosquitoes. IMM uses a combination of methods to prevent and control mosquitoes that spread viruses like West Nile, dengue, and others. Mosquito control professionals conduct mosquito surveillance, remove places where mosquitoes lay eggs, control mosquito larvae and pupae, control adult mosquitoes, and monitor control efforts." -CDC

There are several ways of mosquito management:

Removing places where mosquitos lay eggs

Controlling Larvae and Pupae living in water

Killing adult mosquitos, often with adulticides

Some methods of mosquito management can be done at home such as making sure your yard is clean of debris such as toys, buckets, tires, or anything that may get wet and mosquitos could lay their eggs in.

Emerging methods of Mosquito Control

Over the past several years there have been many new methods of mosquito control in development and practice. Some of the new methods of mosquito management have already been used on other species of insects. These new methods may be used in areas where conventional control such as Ariel spray isn't effective or preferred by the community

Some methods include:

Genetically Modified Mosquitos. some mosquitos can be genetically modified so that their offspring will be unable to reproduce, therefore eradicating a whole generation of future mosquitos.

The irradiating mosquitos method is similar to the GMO mosquitos in the fact that sterilizing the mosquitos will keep them from reproducing.

Wolbachia bacteria method is essentially a harmless bacteria to humans and many insects but if introduced to the mosquito population will prevent the mosquito eggs from hatching.
